Most places are not like this, or else there would be no need for any kind of international travel cancellation insurance.

There are many stories about people who have been tempted to take things that did not belong to them, More often, these stories happen in places like airports and terminals. The sad part is that almost all of those who find items left behind don't think twice about grabbing them. You would be fortunate if this happened to you and someone with scruples found your personal effects.

Let's suppose the worst did happen, and you left something valuable in the lounge of a hotel. The chances of you getting back is very slim. That being said, you would end up with a problem. This problem could mean a abrupt stop to your holiday.

Also, trips are cancelled, so international travel cancellation insurance goes a long way in terms of refund. Even if you don't get to your destination, or arrive late and cause your schedule to go haywire, you're covered by the insurance.

These are just normal, everyday scenarios that happen when traveling. There's no way you can predict something like this.
