Thousands of race fans heading to Dover International Speedway have already discovered the convenience of booking their stay at the Doubletree Hotel Downtown Wilmington Legal District. Comfortable guest rooms and suites are equipped with all the expected amenities and within an easy one hour drive of the race track, making it the ideal place to stay during race weekends. The track is one of the most unique on the NASCAR circuit because of its unusual configuration. The dual purpose facility has a race track built for horses completely encircled by the one mile track built for cars. Legendary stock car champion Richard Petty won the first car race sanctioned by NASCAR on a July afternoon in 1969. Crashed cars are a common site during Dover events and this led to the track being nicknamed the Monster Mile. Only the most skillful of drivers are successful on this tricky track and every race is an exciting experience for the fans in the stands. Speedway officials immortalized Miles the Monster in 2008 when they introduced the humongous Monster Monument in Victory Plaza. At 46 feet tall, Miles will not be ignored as he glares through glowing eyes that are bright red. His menacing visage can be seen by drivers on Route 1 and no one entering the FanZone can possibly miss him as he stands with arm raised and a full sized race car clutched in his fist. The FanZone is nearly eight acres of fun with sponsor booths, interactive attractions and souvenir haulers to entertain visitors. Property owners added a casino in 1995. That same year, construction was completed that converted the track surface from asphalt to concrete. Within six years, the grandstands had expanded to the point that they could accommodate 135,000 fans and the speedway became the pride of the mid-Atlantic region with a capacity that surpassed any other sports facility. The Monster Bridge was opened in 2004, and offers a completely unique viewing experience for fans. The structure is built across the track in Turn 3 and is enclosed in glass. Fans lucky enough to score tickets have an unobstructed view of all the action as it happens right underneath their feet. When the checkered flag falls, fans can head back to Wilmington for a relaxing evening. Guest may order up some room service or head down to the lounge for a drink followed by dinner at the cafe. Race fans can count on the Doubletree to provide everything necessary for an exciting weekend getaway.
