We're here on a 2 week vacation with our kids. Although we've only been here a day it seems like it's been a week. We left Los Angeles and arrived Alejuela, and there jumped on a island hopper to the nicoya peninsula. From there some friends who have a house here picked us up. We went to their house and grounded out, had some drinks and bathed in their pool. The kids were in heaven... just really enjoying their new surroundings. Phil and I had cocktails with Joe and Michelle. We slept soundly. This morning we went horseback riding along the beach at sunrise. We took a quick dip in the ocean before the sun rose too high to be bearable for us white skinned folk.. Then we returned to the house, called a car rental agency, Mapache.. had a car dropped off, and drove up the coast to a swank beach resort hotel. We were going to drive back down to the house tonight, but opted to check in.. and I'm so glad we did! I feel like were on Fantasy Island, with all the hotel staff catering to our every need. The people at reception were very warm and informative. We decided to check in for one night, and just play it by ear. I wouldnt mind just staying here for the remainder of our vacation, but well see what Phil says. After checking out our room--- so beautiful ( I cant wait to see the view in the morning), we walked around the gardens and took in the night air, while the kids played in the pool. The kids have since taken showers to get the chlorine off of them, ( I much prefer the salt water pools), and are now fast asleep. Phil is watching the big screen TV, while I excitedly plan our trip. I think I have it all planned out, thanks to all of the information the folks at reception provided us. Of course, in the morning I will have to run it by the family to see what they think. In the morning I'd like to go horseback riding. One option is to ride along the beach at sunrise. Sounds dreamy, no? Another is to ride into the reserve, into both primary and secondary growth forest. We all want to see wild, tropical animals.. parrots, sloths, pumas, anteaters and, of course, monkeys. But I would also just like to spend some quality time with the kids, before they get too old to enjoy spending time with us. We can all hang out at the pool in the event we decide on staying another night here. Later we can go boating into the sunset and cruise up the coast on a charter boat. It's unbelievably tropical here. The jungle meets up with the ocean with just a thin strip of beach. Monkeys can be heard from miles away.. and sometimes the sound is smothered by the battle calls of small green parrots that fly around in swarms. Someone at reception told me about a night hike that is available for the guests at the hotel. I'm curious to see whats lurking out there at this hour. Nocturnal tarantulas? Armadillos? Bats? I hope there's no mosquitos, because if there is I won't last a minute. I'll high tail it back here to this posh resort, take a bubble bath, and sit out on the deck sipping tea in my bathrobe waiting for the kids to get back. About the Author: Arthur P.
