The drill bits and the socket bits are two necessary accessories for cordless drills. These bits are what make the cordless tool so amazingly useful. Together they can tackle many tasks in all sorts of jobs easily and quickly.

The sizes and shapes of the drill bits cover a wide range. In a nice workshop or tool storage area the assorted drill bits easily take up a large space because there are so many of them. Here's a closer look at this type of accessory.

1. Drill Bit Set

You can easily find more than 5 different types of drill bits in a hardware store. The twist bit and spade bit are the most common ones. They are the cheapest. Then there are masonry bit, auger bit, forstner bit, fuller bit, countersink bit, and others.

A set of twist bits can serve as a basic kit. They range in diameters from a small 1/16th of an inch to a large 1/2 of an inch. Larger bits are to drill holes for bolts or dowels. Dowels and bolts are used on making sturdy tables and chairs. Smaller bits are to drill pilot holes that allow screws to drive in easier. This is a common task in making cabinets.

The bit adapter is square on one end to fit the socket bit, and hexagonal on the other end to go into the jaws of the cordless drill. Larger socket bits have 1/2" square back opening and smaller socket bits have 1/4". So you need two bit adapters for the cordless drill: 1/4" and 1/2". Once you have the bit adapter and socket bit in place, fastening bolts will be like a joyride - thrillingly fast.

2. Drill Bit Set

The cordless drill has quickly replaced socket wrench or adjustable wrench as the tool to use for fastening bolts and nuts. All it needs is a set of socket bits and an adapter that will couple the socket bits to the cordless tool.

The socket bits and a bit adapter work wonderfully with the cordless drill, making it an extremely fast electric socket wrench. When you see how fast a bolt is fastened with a cordless tool and socket bit you will probably chuckle. It's really neat.

The drill bits are made of hardened steel which can drill through wood and soft metals like aluminum or brass. If you work with hard material like plastic laminate or dense hardwood, then choose bits that are coated with special alloy. Good choices can be diamond-tipped, carbide-tipped, or titanium-coated. Those kinds of bits are more durable and the cutting edges stay sharp longer.
