The very first thing you must do is come to the conclusion that what is happening to you is a panic attack and not a cardiac arrest or impending death. That in and of itself can help a lot. At the beginning of a panic fit, make efforts to remind yourself this is simply a panic episode, you are not going to die, it will eventually pass.

An easily implemented treatment for panic episodes is an easy respiring exercise. A very effective one is to put all your concentration on your breathe and count to yourself breathing in one, exhaling one, inhaling two, breathing out two, all of the way up to 10 and start over.

Another cure for panic episodes you may use is to look at your wrist-watch or a clock with a second hand. Watch the minute hand and tell yourself, if you are not dead or going absolutely insane, once one minute passes you'll be all right. Then concentrate on watching the second hand move and try not to think about anything more but the second hand. When one minute is up, do the same again.

Go for two mins to distract you from the symptoms of the panic episode. Symptoms like your hands going numb, the feeling that you can not breathe, the thought that you are having a cardiac arrest, the fear. Focusing on the second hand is a distraction from those thoughts.

While doing this you will still feel all of those feelings, but you must concentrate with all of your might on that second hand. Repeat the method until the panic episode passes, and it will pass. Keep reminding yourself that it is just a panic episode, not upcoming death, does help a lot also.

Say stuff like I've been here before and I know what is happening. It's just my mind playing tricks on me, I will be all right. Just keep doing whatever you can to distract yourself till the attack subsides.

By just sitting there and experiencing the symptoms will only make the panic fit worse. You have to get out of that place and take your concentration off of your symptoms and put it on a cure for panic attacks.

Understand that a panic attack is a wave, and it will pass on its own so long as you do not re-enforce it by concentrating on your fear and your symptoms. Put your focus anywhere else, and ride it out. It will pass. Keep reminding yourself that it's just a panic fit that you are not in any real danger. It is just your mind messing with you. You'll be okay.
