This is an essential question for any self study course, even the more expensive options like Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur, but often it is not actually the course that is to blame but the attitude of the person using the course. And it is hard to get the right attitude when you don't live in a country that speaks the language you are striving to learn. Despite the course or software that you may have opted for, there are two key ingredients to being successful when learning a language. These are consistency and focus. In fact, this is true for anything you are trying to learn but it is doubly important when learning a new language. Basically, we a wired to pick up languages but the thing that holds most people back is that they get into a comfort zone. So you can't fail to learn a new language if you give yourself a proper chance but many people struggle to give themselves a proper chance. As you already speak one language, you have spent many years learning how it works and you are adept at expressing yourself in that language. You probably get great joy from the language by understanding a joke that has a play on words or understanding certain slang phrases. Unfortunately, this enjoyment of the language may be what is holding you back. In order to learn a new language you have to use it consistently. This means using it everyday. Although we are programmed to pick up languages, it seems that repetition and familiarity are ways in which we learn. If you live in a country that doesn't speak the language you are learning, then you may go for several days before even seeing or hearing that language, let alone using it. This is an attitude you have to change. This is where focus comes in. You have to set yourself goals in your language learning that help you to keep learning. You may get frustrated not being able to express what you are thinking and revert back to English. Having a goal can keep you on track. Set small goals and an overall goal (like fluency). Achieving the small goals can keep you motivated. So Rocket French, can help you to be consistent and focused. Thus it can help you to learn French. It has three games that help you learn vocabulary, verb conjugation, pronunciation and comprehension. The audio course can help you hear and use French each day as you go to work for instance. But Rocket French will not help you be successful unless you use it everyday and try to hear and use of little bit of French each day. Ultimately it comes down to how much effort you are willing to put into the learning. The more effort you put in the more successful you will be, regardless of the type of course or method you are using to learn the language.
