Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships provide scholarships to students from financially disadvantaged sections of society who are academically inspired to study abroad and those students who agree to study critical need languages such as Chinese, Indic, Russian, Persian, Arabic, Turkic or Korean will be eligible to receive Critical Need Language Supplement awards to the amount of $3000.

Gilman scholars can receive scholarship up to $5000 and total award including Critical Need Language Supplement cannot exceed $8000. Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State is the sponsor of this scholarship administers by the Institute of International Education in Texas.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) in the U.S. Department of Defense administers the Language Flagship Fellowships and this scholarship program is a crucial part of the National Security Language Initiative. This scholarship is awarded to those students who are curious to study advanced levels of critical need languages or those most significant for national security.

Languages, in which the presence is mandatory (any one of them) as well as complete monetary assistance is accessible are Arabic, Persian, Mandarin, Russian, Korean and Central Asian Turkic languages.

These grants are for maximum two years, which fulfill qualification payments together with tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs and coverage of health insurance but not include any extra help for dependents.

Recipients of scholarships are supposed to involve themselves in the program, in which they enroll, on a full time basis. Thus it is neither possible to pursue any other degree program while receiving support from Flagship Fellowship nor this fellowships can be combined with other funding sources which would require students to donate less than the full time committed for the program. The scholars in lieu of receiving the awards have to work in the federal government as per policies of NSEP.
