Psychology attempts to understand human behavior by studying the mental functions of each person and the social behavior we each exhibit as we relate to each other and society in general. An introductory course will introduce the many varying approaches to psychology. This article; however, will address one of the core topics of the psychological field: Behavioral Psychology. Behavioral Psychology focuses upon how human behavior is the result of the various stimuli experienced in the environment as well as how we perceive that stimuli. The theory of behavioral psychology has been meticulously observed. It is important to note that behavioral psychologists attempt, in their research, to control as many variables in the environment as possible.

Controlling these environmental variables during the research segment permits behavioral psychologists to further extrapolate data and information from the research. The resulting interpretations have been very helpful in formulating much of the behaviorist's approach to understanding human behavior, the environment's impact on human behavior and understanding how new behavior is learned, as well as the motivation required to induce human beings to change. Get started towards a rewarding and interesting career after reading more on psychology online course.

Fundamentally, behavioral psychology attempts to explain human behavior as a learned process. Behavioral psychology theorizes that behavior patterns are the result of the various stimuli in the environment, yet it also states that the impact from thoughts, feelings and emotions are basically useless when attempting to explain behavior.

Classical conditioning, also known as 'learning by association,' is one of the major techniques utilized by behavioral psychologists. Theoretically it is achieved by repeatedly providing a stimulus known to produce an emotional response alongside another stimulus with no known associated emotional response. Over time, as a direct result of this repetition, the second stimulus will induce the same emotional reaction of the first.

A tool used to modify voluntary behavior is known as operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a more practical therapeutic tool than its counterpart classical conditioning. The consequential responses during this conditioning are either negative - the withdrawal of a consequence after a response, or positive - an increase of a consequence after a response. There are basically five different contexts of operant conditioning: negative reinforcement, negative punishment, positive reinforcement, positive punishment, and extinction - that with no change in punishment or reinforcement.

If you seek a career as a behavioral psychologist, you will most likely work within clinical settings where you meet with clients on a regular basis. Over time, a behaviorist will observe behavior patterns, record the patterns, and then interpret how specific behaviors and patterns result in problems for clients. As a psychologist, it is your ultimate goal to identify patterns within your clients' lives and then help modify these patterns to allow them to achieve their life goals and objectives. As a specialist in behavioral psychology, you are trained to help condition and recondition patients to conquer mental blocks and remove obstacles that ultimately lead to dissatisfaction.
