Paul Harvey was a marvelous commentator and I really enjoyed listening to his Paul Harvey News and 'The Rest of the Story' episodes. Of all the news items that stand out, it was the item about prunes that really struck me. At the time of this new item, about 4 or 5 years ago, the country was deeply involved in an E-coli outbreak. We had reports of E-coli in spinach and in hamburger and who knows what else. I am sad to report that a very dear, young lady by the name of Kristee Malone, who worked for my wife and I at the motel, died as a result of E-coli; so whatever you do, give the devil (E-coli) its due. At any rate, Mr. Harvey had a news item that prune juice, when mixed in with hamburger, would kill the E-coli bacteria. Honestly, when I heard this one, my first reaction was ...'What ......??' End of the story ... until 3 or 4 months later. One night, about 2 AM, I was awakened by an intense - and I an mean I n t e n s e and downright severe itch on my left foot, in between my baby toe and next toe. I was scratching, using a wash cloth up and down in between the toes, applying anti-itch medication, anything to try and stop the itch. Nothing worked. An hour of failure went by. As I lay in the dark, trying to think of something - anything I could try to stop the itch, I came up with nothing. And then, probably from the depths of my subconscious, I remembered Mr. Harvey saying that prune juice would kill E-coli bacteria, and I began to reason things out. If prune juice could kill E-coli in hamburger, maybe ... I got up and went to the fridge and pulled out a jar of prune juice. This was crazy, I thought. But when you are desperate, even crazy makes sense. There was about a third of a jar of juice. I went over to the toilet, put my left foot over the edge and slowly poured prune juice on the area. I cupped my left hand under my toes as I poured juice over them. All in all, I probably used about half a cup of juice. Back in bed, after several minutes ... the itch came back. I was a bit angry ... until I became aware that the intensity of the itch was so much less that, even though it did itch, it was a noticeable difference. Encouraged, I went back to the fridge. Again, I poured juice on the itching, affected area, and held my left hand under my toes to help keep the juice in the area before it dripped into the toilet. After it sort of dried, I put the remaining, small amount of juice back in the fridge and walked back to the bedroom. TRUTH: Before I reached my bed the itching stopped, and here we are, 4 or 5 years later, and the itch between my toes has not returned. Thank You Paul Harvey! Epilogue: A couple of years ago, in the summer, I began having an itch on my stomach. It was so bad I literally scratched holes in my Tee shirts. I used the anti-itch medicines I had (OTC and prescription) and even applied the meds and poured alcohol over my stomach, but the itch always came back, usually within an hour. Jerk! Why are you messing around with this stuff that wont help! Get some prune juice! So I did. But with this application, I have a warning. It was evening and I was going to bed. I put on one of my ripped tee shirts and liberally poured prune juice all over my tee shirt where my stomach itched, I let it dry and did a repeat pour and went back to bed. In the morning there was no itch, and I have not had it come back. But I almost had my ass whipped! The prune juice dripped on to the sheets, and Karen had a fit! They were stained brown and it was hard as can be to get cleaned. I heard about it for days ... So guys, heres ample warning: if you try this at home, make sure you have a large, thick towel underneath you!' And if you do try the killer prune juice, add your Comments and let us know how it worked for you.
