Distance learning is a method of education which allows people who are not actually present in teaching rooms to access education programmes when and where it is most convenient for them to do so. It is especially useful for those people who live in remote areas, away from the education opportunities afforded by urban living, or those whose lifestyle does not allow them to attend a more conventional educational facility.

Other students may not want to attend more conventional classes, for a whole host of reasons, perhaps for privacy or convenience. This kind of educational opportunity was often referred to as a 'correspondence course' in the past, because until fairly recently they were conducted largely through the post.

In the past, this type of course was often advertised in magazines and newspapers, but that did not mean that it was amateurish or cheap in all cases. The University of London, after all, launched what it called its 'External Programme' in 1858, and many of the world's most respected and famous colleges and universities now deliver many courses in this kind of way.

The development of the internet has of course led to a massive expansion in opportunities to learn from afar. Tutors and students can interact in real time in ways which were almost inconceivable until the last few years.

The internet and digital technology means that courses can be delivered either simultaneously, with the whole class 'present' as a teacher delivers a class in real time, possibly with the aid of a webcam. It also opens up greater multimedia options for students to learn in the own time, with resources which are tailored for their requirements.

Distance learning offers clear benefits to educational institutions on a number of levels, not least in terms of infrastructure, buildings and classroom furnishings. More development of the idea is sure to come as digital technology continues to leap ahead, and opportunities for ever greater flexibility and accessibility are sure to be the result.
