Many people don't realize that stress is often the problem when they can't get to sleep at night because their mind is running over the problems of their day. If you struggle to stay asleep during the night or are frequently disturbed by dreams or nightmares chances are that it's stress related. If you're having trouble sleeping, you should try changing some of your evening habits, and look at what you're eating and drinking; heavy meals or any type of stimulants can make it harder to sleep. That's not to say that every sleep disturbance is caused by stress but many of them are. The most important thing you can do for your physical and mental health is get to the bottom of your sleep issues.

One of the most serious side effects of stress is high blood pressure, which can lead to life threatening physical illnesses. While your diet and genetics can play a part in high blood pressure, stress can also contribute to it. Even though there might be another cause, stress can make high blood pressure worse. Learning to manage your stress can help you prevent or even manage your high blood pressure. While there are many other reasons to keep stress at a minimum, controlling your blood pressure should be at the top of the list.

People who are under a lot of stress can often experience frequent headaches. While headaches have a variety of causes, you should see a doctor if you get them frequently. The worst type of stress-related headaches is migraines. Along with headaches, stress can also lead to dental problems because you tend to clench your jaw or grind your teeth. If you don't deal with stress now, these examples might become a reality for you and get worse over time. Many people find that as they learn to manage their stress that their physical symptoms vanish.

Stress symptoms aren't the same for every person. Allowing stress to get out of control can cause you some real harm physically and emotionally although there are both good and bad stresses. This is why it's so important to identify the symptoms as soon as possible and find ways to manage and cope with them.
